Lecture by Art Critic Doug Harvey

What Isn't Art?

------------------------------

Join us for a lecture by LA Weekly Art Critic Doug Harvey on Wednesday, April 9 at 5 p.m., Griffin Concert Hall, University Center for the Arts.  The talk is free and open to the public.

------------------------------

About the Lecture

Doug Harvey has been the chief art critic for LA Weekly since 1997, where he has authored over 300 biweekly articles.  He previously served as a contributing editor at Modern Painters and Art Issues.

In the history of 20th century art, the boundaries between art and life are often blurred.  This certainly remains true in the contemporary scene.  Doug Harvey is an extremely insightful writer and critic and will shed light on this fascinating topic in his lecture based on his book in progress.

For more about Doug Harvey.

------------------------------

This lecture is part of the Critic and Artist Residency Series made possible by the FUNd at CSU that brings nationally and internationally prominent artists, critics and curators to CSU for public lectures, class room visits, critiques and gallery talks.

Everyone can tell a Norwegian from a Nubian, so why doesn’t it make sense to sort people into biological races?  Examine the contemporary science – including genetics – that challenges our assumptions about human groups.

» Astronomical Data and Sensing Methods on Earth

The Sky’s the Limit: Using Astronomical Data and Sensing Methods on Earth

------------------------------

This presentation will be held at the Center for Science, Math & Technology Education, on the CSU campus on April 9 at 7 p.m.  Come to seminar room # A 302 in the Natural & Environmental Sciences building.

Dr. Eric R. Craine is the speaker and the topic is: The Sky’s the Limit: Using Astronomical Data and Sensing Methods on Earth.

The Global Network of Astronomical Telescopes (GNAT) has undertaken an aggressive sky survey program that is now producing a large stream of unique astronomical imagery.  One of our goals is to encourage development and implementation of a variety of educational experiences using GNAT data and programs.

We will explore specific projects available across a broad range of scientific education contexts and discuss a variety of tools that can assist in embarking on these voyages of discovery.

These opportunities include environmental monitoring of night sky brightness, exercises in star distributions & discovery and analysis of properties of variable stars.  We will review:

-- examples of relevant software packages and discuss their utility, including sky brightness monitoring (SkyView), image acquisition and processing (CCDSoft and MaxIM DL);

-- variable star period analysis (PERANSO) and spectroscopy (VSpec); and

-- discuss “recipes” for implementing simple but powerful astronomical imaging programs on telescopes typical of those already available to many school systems.

Beyond the realm of science education, the sensing and image processing methods used in astronomy have many other applications.  We will discuss a few of these, including a new medical application which has the potential to assist in the detection and diagnosis of skin cancer.

We welcome collaborators in applying our data and hope to encourage its wide use.

Biographical Sketch of Dr. Eric R. Craine

Dr. Craine earned his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the Ohio State University; he worked in areas of radio astronomy in Algonquin Park Observatory, Canada and later did optical spectroscopy of extragalactic radio sources at Kitt Peak National Observatory (Tucson, Arizona) and Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona.

He left the university to assume the Directorship of the Electro-Optical Test Facility for the U.S. Army after which he began an entrepreneurial career by founding and running two technology companies.  He is currently President of Western Research Company, Inc. (Tucson, AZ), a Founding Director of the Global Network of Astronomical Telescopes and an Adjunct Faculty in the Physics Department of Colorado State University.

» Italian Film: Seven Beauties

Italian Film: Pasqualino Settebellezze or Seven Beauties

------------------------------

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is pleased to present Italian Film night on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in Eddy Room 212.

Pasqualino Settebellezze or Seven Beauties (1975) by Lina Wertmuller stars Giancarlo Giannini and Fernando Rey.  The film is free and open to the public.

------------------------------

Film Synopsis

This outrageous comedy-drama of two Italian deserters in Germany during World War II can be shocking as it shows vividly some of the horrors of war while managing to be deeply comical in the portrayal of human fears, selfishness and weaknesses.

A film critic in the New York Times called the movie,"the work of a filmmaker at the peak of her energies, (so) full of ideas and images." Another praised Wertmuller for having "succeeded where Brecht had failed."

Yet another summed up the movie as "a terrifying vision of life and death, pride and degradation, honor and survival in a Nazi concentration camp, intensified by Wertmuller's sense of the comic and the absurd and deepened by her humanity and taste for paradox."

I hope you can join us.

» Women at Noon

Women at Noon: Raising Feminist Sons

------------------------------

On Wednesday, April 9, at noon in room 228 in the Lory Student Center, Women at Noon will present Jill Kuhn, Psychologist and Feminist Writer, who will speak on Raising Feminist Sons.

Patriarchy as an institution damages girls, women, boys, and men.

Without denying that men clearly maintain privilege in our society, and thus women and children suffer from oppression within this system, it is still useful to think about how we can raise boys into men who equally share in economic, political and social equality with women.  That is, to change the very roots of an oppressive system.

Please join us as we discuss what the research shows about gender roles and how to use this information to draw concrete ideas for parenting boys.
