SOWK 590 Practical Skills for Managing Interpersonal Conflict
Sunday, November 8, 2009, 08:30 AM
CSU, Brighton

In virtually any relationship, whether with friends, couples or families, colleagues or communities, the question is not “if” we will experience conflict, but “how” we will deal with conflict when it occurs. Too often conflict is associated with the negative experiences, rather than the positive possibility of resolution, reconciliation and renewal. This course will seek to demystify conflict. Topics will include: alternatives to the “fight-flight” response to conflict, personal styles in conflict, models for understanding conflict, initiating civil confrontation, building “relationship bank accounts”, uncovering underlying interests, finding common ground with the “others”, asking powerful questions, listening and presence, expressing yourself and being heard and understood, breaking impasse, balancing power, making powerful apologies, and easing tough conversations.
