Location: Estes Park YMCA of the Rockies Date: Saturday, February 18, 2012 Departure: 7:30am on Saturday leaving from Laurel Hall. Return: 10:30pm on Saturday at (various drop off locations)
Every semester, students from Colorado State University are invited to interact with students from across the globe at the Day in the Mountains retreat. A majority of the international students who attend the retreat have just arrived in the United States for the first time, and are still in the process of acclimating to American culture. This retreat serves as an extension of the International Student Orientation Program and is highly encouraged of all new international students as a way to overcome culture shock and relieve stress.
This past Fall, 130 students from 32 countries attended the retreat. Activities change each year, but they always focus on a few primary goals: to ease students' transition to life in the U.S., to help them understand the process of cultural adjustment, and most importantly, to provide a fun and relaxing break from campus and school work. There are sessions on practical tips for U.S. living, overcoming culture shock, and the always popular slang terms!
Favorite activities of students the past few years have included:
- Hiking through the beautiful forests of the Rocky Mountains
- Playing sports and games with new friends
- Rollerskating at the YMCA
- Holding a student talent show
- Taking advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Rocky Mountains and meet new friends.
The cost for new students is $10. The cost for everyone else that wants to attend (scholars, spouses, seasoned students, Americans) is $25. The cost covers 3 meals, materials and transportation, a $65 value! Sorry, no refunds. The final day to sign up is 4:00pm, Friday, February 3, 2011.
