Fat Must Go Before Muscle Can Grow
Friday, January 20, 2012, 03:00 PM
Room 211 Moby-B-Complex

The Department of Health & Exercise Science presents a seminar by David L. Williamson, Ph.D., from the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, University of Buffalo: Does A High Fat Environment Prematurely Age Skeletal Muscle? Being obese has negative effects on skeletal muscle mass and function, similar to what is observed during aging but at a younger age. There are limited data regarding the role of a high lipid environment (intracellular or extracellular) on skeletal muscle proliferative capacity and growth. This seminar will discuss how obesity and high fat diet approaches have been used in an attempt to understand this problem, at the level of proteins and processes regulating protein synthesis and subsequent muscle mass.
