Veteran's Day 5K

The Oval at Colorado State University

A family-friendly 5K run/walk for all ages through the beautiful campus of Colorado State University.

The event, hosted by the CSU Adult Learner and Veteran Services Office and the CSU Student Veteran Organization, is Saturday, Nov. 12, at CSU.

  • Colorado Race Day registration: 7:30 a.m.
  • Race start: 9 a.m.
  • Preregistration by noon, Nov. 11: $25
  • Race-day registration: $30

Net proceeds from this race will be used toward the (Veteran) Scholarship Fund at CSU.

This year's Veterans Day 5k will be held in honor of Sgt. Nick Walsh. USMC. Sgt. Walsh, 26, was a dedicated Marine and beloved husband, father, son, brother, and grandson who took great pride in serving his country. Nick was assigned to the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, when he was killed by an enemy sniper while conducting combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq, on May 26, 2007.

Nick enlisted in the Marine Corps upon graduation from John Carroll High School in Birmingham, Ala., in 1997, and served until 2001. He re-enlisted in 2004 and was on his second deployment to Iraq when he was killed.

His military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V. Nick was an outstanding Marine, an adoring father and husband, and a wonderful son and brother.

He is survived in Fort Collins by parents, Jerry and Maggie (a CSU employee); brothers, Ian and Flynn; sister, Fiona; and grandfather, Taylor Hall. Nick’s wife, Julie, and two sons, Triston and Tanner, live in Millstadt, Ill.
