NREL Spring Seminar, NREL, SUPER and EcoPress Groups The theme of the NREL Spring 2012 Seminar Series is "Bridging the Gap between Science and Society through Scientific Data Literacy." This seminar will be presented by Shinichi Asao, Randall Boone, Claudia Boot, Jessica Ernakovich, Jules Kray and Andrew Tredennick. The title of the talk is: "Two new outreach activities for NREL: Training undergraduates for laboratory participation and communicating our science to a broader audience." Abstract: We will discuss two new outreach activites underway at NREL that can help NREL scientists in educating the public. The first is SUPER (Skills for Undergraduate Participation in Ecological Research), a program designed to elevate teh level of undergraduate research at NREL. The program will educate undergradutes to be more than just sets of hands and to become thinking researchers. It will grant NREL unparalleled access to quality undergraduates. The second is EcoPress (nrelscience.org), a science communication website for NREL to communicate our science to a broader audience. EcoPress will serve 4 general purposes: 1) allow us to increase our audience, 2) provide a venue through which to learn and practice effective science communication, 3) encourage cross-disciplinary interactions, and 4) raise the overall profile of NREL and the science we conduct. ------------------------------ Event Contact: Wendy Gleason can be reached at (970) 491-1984 Sponsored by the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory. |
