AED Orientation
Monday, October 9, 2006, 01:30 PM

Do you have an AED in your building? Do you not know how, why or when to use it? The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) orientation session will teach you everything you need to know.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurs in approximately 350,000 people in the United States every year. 225,000 of these people die, and approximately 100,000 of these deaths could be prevented if Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) were more widely available. A heart attack can strike anyone, anywhere, at anytime. According to the American Red Cross, the only definitive treatment for SCA is a defibrillation shock that restores a normal heart rhythm. The chance of an SCA victim's survival decreases by 10% for every minute that passes. If an AED is placed on the chest of a cardiac arrest victim within 3 minutes of the heart attack, 80% have a chance for survival.

These small portable devices are so easy to use that the University currently has AEDs available for public access at eighteen campus locations. Large-scale AED orientations have been made available for the University community in order to alert building occupants of their AED locations, equipment overview, and hands-on practice with manikins. Site-specific CPR/AED certifications are provided through trained AED committee members. Come learn about AEDs. Bring your co-workers.
