CSU Jazz Combo Concert

The Colorado State University Jazz Combos present original music as well as arrangements of jazz standards and classics in a performance on Friday, Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m. at the University Center for the Arts located at 1400 Remington Street, Fort Collins.

The concert includes performances by CSU Jazz Combo II under the direction of Mike Gomez, CSU Jazz Combo I under the direction of professor Peter Sommer, and the newly formed CSU Faculty/Graduate Combo, featuring professor Sommer with bass professor Forest Greenough and CSU graduate students Shilo Stroman and Mike Gomez.

The CSU Jazz Combos each feature seven of the jazz program’s top students in a small group format.  CSU Jazz Combo I will highlight original student compositions by Joey Thompson, Cynthia Alvarez and Andrew Diessner; the Faculty/Graduate Combo will introduce original music by Sommer, Shilo Stroman and Mike Gomez.

CSU Jazz Combos approach programming from a perspective of educational value.  Typical choices are more classic arrangements from McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, with a healthy mixture of contemporary composers.  The Jazz Combos experience broadens student creativity and chart writing skills with the creation and presentation of original pieces.
