Santa Cops of Larimer County is taking applications for toy delivery on Saturday Nov. 7, 1-5 p.m. ------------------------------Why we do not take paper applications? In the last 20+ years since Santa Cops first delivered toys to children in Larimer County, it has grown into an organization which provides toys to approximately 4,000 children each year at Christmastime. In light of this, in 2004 Santa Cops computerized their application process in order to make it run more smoothly and to ensure the information needed for the applications is complete and correct. ------------------------------How to apply to receive toys for your childrenCome to University Village, 1600 W. Plum, on Saturday, Nov. 7 between 1 and 5 p.m. Santa Cops board members and volunteers will meet individually with applicants and enter their names, addresses, kids' information and wish lists for Santa directly into the computer. If an applicant does not speak English, they are asked to bring along someone who can translate for them. ------------------------------Bring the following information Applicants will be asked to provide the following information:• A photo ID • Birth Certificate, resident alien card, passport, or school record for each child • Proof of address (for example: electric bill or phone bill) • Gift ideas for each of your children (less than $20) For more information, visit the Larimer County Santa Cops website or call our hotline number at (970) 498-5553. Any information provided to Santa Cops is intended solely for the use of Santa Cops of Larimer County and will not be used for any other purpose.

Modeling Smart Grid Systems: Coordinating Flexibility from Residential Electricity Demand to Aid Smart Grid Operations------------------------------Join us for a Smart Grid faculty candidate seminar presentation by Daniel Livengood titled, 'Modeling Smart Grid Systems: Coordinating Flexibility from Residential Electricity Demand to Aid Smart Grid Operations.' ------------------------------AbstractDepending on whom you ask, the smart grid could include anything and everything from large wind farms and high-voltage transmission lines down to the thermostat in your home. Modeling and simulating the interactions on the electric grid at various levels of space and time are necessary to understand how best to operate the electric grid as it evolves into the smart grid. I will discuss my research on one of the smaller units on the smart grid: the individual residence. I will introduce what we call the Energy Box, which is proposed as a 24/7 background processor operating on a local computer or in a remote location, silently managing one's home electrical energy usage hour-by-hour and even minute-by-minute. We assume that the residence has some combination of (1) addressable and controllable appliances, (2) local storage (including plug-in electric vehicles), and (3) weather-dependent distributed generation. We also consider the possibility of retail electricity consumers facing time-varying pricing of electricity. Our primary integrating method of optimization and control given the uncertainties of time-varying pricing and weather-dependent distributed generation is stochastic dynamic programming. From these assumptions, I will discuss tradeoffs between benefits to the consumer versus benefits to the smart grid, as well as tradeoffs between control strategies that consider controlling one appliance at a time versus coordinated control across multiple appliances and storage devices in the home.

Physics Colloquium - Andrew Ludlow, Ph.D. (11/9/2009)

'Timekeeping for Tomorrow: Atomic Clocks Using Ultracold Atoms in an Optical Lattice'-------------------------------The colloquium speaker is Andrew Ludlow, Ph.D. Refreshments will be available before the colloquium at 3:45 pm. ------------------------------AbstractAtomic clocks find significant roles in a number of scientific and technological settings. One interesting approach to a next-generation clock utilizes alkaline earth atoms confined in an optical lattice. Strong confinement of the atoms eliminates motional effects which otherwise trouble the interrogation of the electronic transition at the heart of the clock. At the same time, the optical lattice equally perturbs the two electronic clock states so that the confinement introduces a net zero shift of the natural transition frequency. Here I describe the design and realization of optical frequency standards using 87Sr and 171Yb, among the most common choices worldwide for the development of these types of standards. With an ultra-stable laser light source, atomic spectral linewidths of the optical clock transition are observed below 2 Hz. High accuracy spectroscopy of the clock transition is carried out utilizing a frequency comb referenced to the NIST-F1 Cs fountain clock.Remote comparison of the Sr system at JILA and the Yb system at NIST enables frequency measurements at a fractional level below 1 part in 1016. The performance of these state-of-the-art systems is discussed, as well as how these systems will improve in the upcoming years. ------------------------------About the speakerAndrew received a B.S. in Physics from Brigham Young University. There he worked with Prof. Scott Bergeson, using optical cavities and laser thermometry techniques to study two photon absorption processes in crystals. In 2002, he began graduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder as part of the Optical Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program. He worked with Prof. Jun Ye, developing an optical atomic clock based on ultracold neutral strontium atoms confined in an optical lattice. This work culminated in an accuracy evaluation of the newly constructed strontium optical frequency standard, demonstrating one of the smallest frequency uncertainties of any standard, including primary standards based on cesium. Furthermore, these efforts contributed to the international acceptance of the strontium standard as a practical realization of the meter and a secondary representation of the (SI) second. Andrew received the JILA scientific achievement award in 2006 and the 2009 APS DAMOP thesis prize. He currently serves as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at NIST in Boulder.

Being in a leadership position inevitably includes dealing with conflict. When the dust settles, however, will the leader be respected and admired for how s/he managed the conflict? Since not every situation is the same, leaders should have a conflict management philosophy that guides them with grace through all situations. This session highlights essential skills for managing conflict that rest on a transformative philosophy.Participants will assess their current conflict management skills, gain additional knowledge and skills, and hone their conflict management philosophy for a future of leading.

Violence Against Native Women & Children'------------------------------Roe Bubar, a CSU Ethnic Studies professor, and Ron Hall, Director of the Tribal Technical Assistance Program, will speak about the sexual violence that occurs against Native women and children, and the role the United States Supreme Court and Congress play in the issue. Native women have the highest rates of sexual violence of any other group. They are stalked, battered and victimized at much greater rates than other women in the U.S. Currently, the federal government has jurisdiction over violent crimes in most tribal communities, but entrusts responsibility to tribes. This session will explore the role of the state in this critical yet invisible epidemic. ------------------------------What is the 'Trust Responsibility?'Trust responsibilty refers to the duty the United States government has to the Tribal Nations to protect tribal sovereignty and tribal resources. The U.S. government also has a responsibility in overseeing issues of criminal justice with regards to major crimes. This presentation will looks at the role of the Supreme Court, the federal government, and Congress in the provision of safety in tribal communities -- particularly as it relates to sexual violence against Native women and children.- Complete schedule of CSU Native American Awareness Month events

'Characterization of Gaseous and Particulate Emissions from Algae-Based Methyl Ester Biodiesel'------------------------------Bethany Fisher will give a M.S. final exam and defense at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the EECL Conference Room.Advisor: Anthony Marchese, Ph.D.Committee: Daniel Olsen, Ph.D., John Volckens, Ph.D.------------------------------AbstractThe many advantages to using biodiesel in place of petroleum diesel are typically accompanied by the disadvantages. Oil-producing microalgae is a favorable alternative to the more common biodiesel feedstocks (soy, canola, etc.) because it does not compete with food sources, does not require arable land to grow and has the potential to produce significantly more oil per area per year than soy or canola crops. However, the fatty acid composition of the oil produced by algae species currently under consideration for fuel production differs from that of the more common vegetable oils in that it often includes high quantities of long and highly unsaturated fatty acids. When transesterified into fatty acid methyl esters (i.e. FAME biodiesel), the unique fatty acid composition could have a substantial impact on tailpipe emissions such as NOx and particulate matter (PM). Accordingly, the goal of this study was to examine the effect of the chemical structure of algal methyl esters on pollutant emissions from a diesel engine operating on algae-based FAME biodiesel. Tests were performed on a 2.4 L, 56 HP John Deere 4024T, non-road diesel engine meeting USEPA Tier 2 emissions regulations. The engine was fitted with a unique, low-volume fuel system that enable emissions tests to be conducted with very small specialty fuel samples. Tests were performed on 9 different fuel blends at 2 different engine loading conditions. Exhaust gas measurements were made using 5-gas emissions analysis system that includes chemiluminescence measurement of NO, NO2 and total NOx, flame ionization detection of total hydrocarbons, paramagnetic detection of oxygen and non-dispersive infrared detection of CO and CO2. Particulate matter was characterized on-line, using an Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS), which is capable of direct measurement of particle composition. Smaller PM size distributions (10 to 1000 nm) were measured using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer. Total PM mass emissions and the ratio of elemental carbon to organic were measured using gravimetric sampling. Experiments were performed with ultra-low sulfur diesel, soy biodiesel (B20 and B100), canola biodiesel (B20 and B100), and two synthetic algal methyl ester formulations (B20 and B100 for each). The algal methyl esters were found to result in decreased NOx relative to both canola and soy biodiesel and ULSD, in contrast to previous research that examined the effect of fatty acid saturation and chain length on NOx emissions. A correlation was found between NOx emissions and premixed burn fraction, which provides an explanation for these results. Total hydrocarbons, formaldehyde and the organic carbon particulate matter were found to be slightly elevated with the two algal fuels in comparison with the traditional feedstocks. The other tests, including particle size distribution, total PM mass, and CO and acetaldehyde levels, showed similar results between the different types of biodiesel.

'Research in the coldest desert on earth, the Antarctic Dry Valleys'------------------------------Diana Wall, Ph.D., Director of the School of Global Environmental Sustainability, Senior Research Scientist, Natural Resouce Ecology Laboratory, and Professor, Department of Biology at Colorado State University, will give her favorite lecture titled, 'Research in the coldest desert on earth, the Antarctic Dry Valleys.' Please arrive early as the TILT auditorium has limited seating.--------------------------------Wall a seasoned veteran of Antarctic researchIn the past 10 years, Wall has documented striking changes in the Dry Valleys, as reported by The New York Times. While the temperature across much of Antarctica is rising, the Dry Valleys experienced a regional cooling period, which in turn led to cooler and drier soils. As a result, the population of an Antarctic nematode has shrunk by 65 percent since 1993 – a drop that translates to a loss of a third of the total carbon cycling in the ecosystem. Scientists are seeking to find out whether similar disturbances are taking place worldwide. In 2006, Wall received an honorary doctorate from the Netherlands' Utrecht University for her pioneering research on soil biodiversity, a focal point in many international cooperative ecological research programs. Wall also was elected to the board of directors of the influential World Resources Institute, an environmental think tank, in recognition of her dedication to environmental research, education and science communication.[Above courtesy of [http://www.green.colostate.edu.]------------------------------What is the 'My Favorite Lecture Series?'The Institute for Learning and Teaching's 'My Favorite Lecture' series gives CSU students the opportunity to learn from and interact with some of CSU's internationally recognized scholars.

Special NREL Seminar, Henrik Andrén, Swedish University of Ag Sciences------------------------------Please join us for a NREL Special Seminar on Thursday, Nov. 12, frin 11 a.m. to noon in Room B215 of the Natural and Environmental Sciences Building. Our speaker is Henrik Andrén Grimsö, Wildlife Research Station, Department of Conservation Biology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Riddarhyttan, Sweden.Title: 'The interaction Eurasian lynx and roe deer - damped cycles?'------------------------------AbstractWe have studied the predation rate on roe deer by Eurasian lynx, by intensive radio tracking of lynx to get kill rate and by roe deer survey in south-central Sweden (around Grimsö Wildlife Research Station). The overall kill rate was 4.2 roe deer / month and lynx. However, male kill rate (4.2 roe deer/month) was higher than lone females (2.4 roe deer/month). Lynx family groups (mother with one or two kittens) had the highest kill rate (4.7 roe deer/month), but kill rate per lynx was about the same as for lone females. We could not find any selected for specific roe deer categories, i.e. fawns, adult females and adult males, in the roe deer killed by lynx. The estimated predation rate on a local roe deer population (1200 km2) was about 10% and we have seen a decline in the roe deer population, from 5 roe deer per km2 in 1996 to 2 roe deer per km2 in 2005 (yearly decline by 11 % since lynx re-colonized the area in 1997). On a larger geographical scale we have followed the changes in both lynx and roe deer densities during 13-years in 7 regions (between 10 000 and 20 000 km2). The interaction seems to follow Lotka-Volterra predator-prey interaction with damped cycles towards low density of both the predator and the prey.
